Lyon County manager to bring wild horse watering issue to Board of Commissioners
UPDATE OCT. 4: The item is not on the Oct. 5 agenda and has been rescheduled to Oct. 19. We apologize for the confusion.

On Thursday, Oct. 5, the Lyon County Board of Commissioners will be presented with safety concerns in reference to wild horses on Highway 50. Current code prohibits the watering of wild horses within 1,500 feet of a highway right of way.
There has been a push to extend that 1,500 foot boundary. County Manager Jeff Page also wants to address the neighborhood issues, park and open space issues and wild horses.
Page explained that not only are the horses crossing the highway but they are also getting into neighborhoods and causing damage to private property.
Page proposes addressing the watering issue by prohibiting watering of the horses in accordance to zoning. He says it makes sense to allow bigger parcels that are zoned resource, ag, open space, etc. to water the horses as they are away from populated areas.
To report horses in the Virginia Range Area (395 to 95A and I-80 to highway 50) that pose a threat to public safety, please call the Department of Agriculture horse hotline at (775) 353-3608 with specific details – date, time, address or location.
