Carson City woman arrested for attempting to steal $80,000 from her employer
A Carson City woman was arrested by Carson City deputies Thursday afternoon after allegedly attempting to steal $80,000 from her ex-employer, according to the arrest report.
Helen Donner Kelly was arrested after deputies were contacted by the accountant of the business who reported that they had received a call from the bank advising that Kelly had entered the bank that day and requested to close the current business account for the employer and have the funds transferred into her personal account.
The bank told the accountant that Kelly had provided them with documents from the Office of the Secretary of State which showed Kelly is the new CEO of the company.
The bank advised Kelly she would need to return at a later date to finish the transaction, and scheduled an appointment to do so.
Deputies contacted the Office of the Secretary of State and spoke with their compliance investigator. The investigator confirmed Kelly had entered their office on Aug. 20 and filed an amended business license application for the employer which showed her as the new CEO and Treasurer. She paid the required fee, and the state updated their data to show that Kelly was now the CEO of the company.
The accountant told deputies Kelly was an ex-employee who had never had an invested interest in the company. She did not have the proper authority to change the business into her name.
On the scheduled date Kelly was told to return to the bank, deputies arrived and took her into custody for uttering or possessing a fictitious document with intent, offering false instruments to be filed with teh State and attempted obtaining money under false pretense.
