DUI checkpoint results in five arrests
Law enforcement personnel from 4 northern Nevada agencies conducted a DUI checkpoint on State Road 445 (Pyramid Highway) near Egyptian Drive in Spanish Springs yesterday afternoon. Deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, police officers from the Reno and Sparks Police Departments and troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol participated in the “Joining Forces” holiday weekend administrative roadblock from 1:30 pm – 7:30 pm. During the 6-hour event, 1008 vehicles were screened with 22 of those directed into the secondary screening area. Of the 22 motorists contacted in the secondary screening area, 5 were arrested for DUI.
The “Joining Forces” grant program is one of the many Nevada Office of Traffic Safety’s proactive safety initiatives coordinated directly with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to provide grant funding for special enforcement campaigns, education, equipment and training throughout the calendar year.
There are currently 28 law enforcement agencies statewide that participate in this program. Some of those enforcement campaigns include DUI saturation patrols and checkpoints, speed enforcement, traffic signal enforcement at identified high-accident intersections, and crosswalk & pedestrian safety enforcement initiatives.
