Evacuation shelters fill in Carson City, evacuees told to go to Reno-Sparks Convention Center

A notice on the Carson High School web site states that all after school and evening activities scheduled for tonight, Monday, Feb. 4 have been canceled because of inclement weather.

A 30 year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday morning at 8:50 a.m. in the 2000 block of West College Parkway for misdemeanor violation of a temporary protection order (TPO) and resisting an officer, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

On Monday, the 80th session of the Nevada State Legislature began with a welcoming snowfall, which is expected to continue until Tuesday morning.

This session marks the first time in U.S. history that state has elected a female-majority legislature after Rochelle Thuy Nguyen and Beatrice Angela Duran were appointed to two open seats in Las Vegas, bringing the total seats held by women to 33 out of 63.

The Nevada Department of Transportation has published a comprehensive lsit of safe winter driving tips on its web site, www.nevadadot.com, a good resource to review as heavy snowfall is blanketing the Carson City area today into Tuesday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Carson City area and greater Reno-Tahoe region in effect now until 10 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Heavy snowfall is forecast for the greater Reno, Carson City and Minden area with total accumulation between 6-12 inches. Up to two feet of snow is forecast for elevations above 5,000 feet.

Students in the Carson City School District will enjoy a snow day on their Monday off as district staff attend professional development today.

School district spokesman Dan Davis said the professional development day will start on schedule; although weather will continue to be monitored for hazardous travel conditions.

Carson City Firefighter-Paramedics and Sheriff's deputies are on scene of a single-vehicle rollover accident on Deer Run Road near U.S. Highway 50 East in Carson City.

One 12 year-old victim has minor injuries, believed to be limited to lacerations. Two other occupants, both teenagers, appear unhurt at this time.

Traffic on Deer Run Road has been shut down while emergency crews work the accident.

Carson City artist Cynthia Brenneman’s fascination with art started at a young age and has never wavered, even as she served her country in the U.S. Navy.

I am leery when I see "dwarf" mugos (Pinus mugo) sold in stores. The idea of a pine that stays tiny and round is tempting for the interesting shape and texture it brings to a landscape. However, "dwarf" can be misleading.

Apparently those perpetrating the phone scam from January are back at it again. Although the ruse has changed slightly, the method of operation remains the same.

A couple of times in the movie "It's a Wonderful Life," main character George Bailey closes his eyes, raises his right hand, and says "I wish I had a million dollars!" while pressing the lever of a lighter contraption on Mr. Gower's drug store counter.

Buying the Ormsby House wasn't on George Bailey's wish list. Then again, he'd need at least 10 times more if it was.

A Carson City man will have to spend six months in Douglas County Jail as a condition of a suspended five-year prison term. William B. Soukup, 20, appeared in Douglas County District Court for sentencing on a felony burglary.
