Winter Storm Warning in effect now through Tuesday for Carson City area, region
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Carson City area and greater Reno-Tahoe region in effect now until 10 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Heavy snowfall is forecast for the greater Reno, Carson City and Minden area with total accumulation between 6-12 inches. Up to two feet of snow is forecast for elevations above 5,000 feet.
Accumulation of 2-5 feet is forecast at Lake Tahoe level and 4-8 feet above 7,000 feet elevation.
The heaviest snowfall is expected through Monday afternoon for the entire region, the NWS said. Heavier snow accumulations are forecast for areas south of Reno Monday night into Tuesday morning.
Winds gusts down in the valleys Monday could reach as high as 50 miles per hour (mph), creating periods of blowing snow and low visibility; especially in wind-prone areas.
These hazardous conditions are likely to impact all morning and evening commutes through Tuesday morning, the NWS reported.
Travel is not advised, the NWS said. If you must be on the road, prepare for long delays and carry an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing. If you stay
home, have a backup plan in case of power outages.
A cold-air front moving into the region with the storm is expected to keep daytime high temperatures around Carson City in the 30s. Overnight lows could get as cold as 10 degrees by mid-week.
Avalanche danger in the Sierras is high with this storm, the NWS reported, due to heavy snowfall and high winds.
