The main evacuation shelter at the Carson City Community Center is now open as of late Monday afternoon, as is the secondary evacuation site for those with large and small animals at Fuji Park, according to Carson City's Emergency Manager.

The evacuation site in Gardnerville was at capacity early Monday afternoon, prompting the new main site at the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William Street and further south at Fuji Park, 601 Old Clear Creek Road.

The American Red Cross is checking in people at both locations and are following COVID protocols, said Carson City Emergency Manager Jason Danen. The shelter is staffed for those who need a place to shelter and sleep, food, and other matters.

The Red Cross has put up sleeping areas for the evacuees inside. People are encouraged to stay in the center, the parking lots of both sites or they can go to local motels and hotels.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, 2180 S Carson St., has a larger parking lot available for overnight parking for those with an RV or small camper. Outdoor restrooms are also available.

Lyon County has opened evacuation sites for recreational vehicles, large animals and dry camping only at the Dayton Event Center, Rodeo Grounds and at the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Yerington. Lyon County is not, at this time, opening a shelter.

Thousands of evacuees were ordered to leave the City of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., on Monday morning as the Caldor Fire threatened to move into the city limits.

Elsewhere, Jim Peckham, Executive Director of Friends in Service Helping, said FISH will provide lunch and dinner meals to evacuees as needed at the FISH Family Dining Room, 138 E. Long St., Carson City.

The Northern Nevada Dream Center is assisting evacuees and is taking donations of water, wet and dry pet foods, snacks, blankets and toiletries. Items can be dropped off today, Monday, starting at 3 pm and all week between 10 to 2 pm. NNDC in the Istorage Business Park on Hwy 50 East across from Goodwill, 3579 Hwy 50 East No. 211.
