Man arrested after allegedly strangling woman unconscious, said he was defending himself

A 38-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 300 block of East Winnie Lane on Saturday evening for suspicion of felony domestic battery with strangulation, felony dissuading a victim from reporting a crime, and a gross misdemeanor of false imprisonment, a sheriff's deputy said.

Darcy William Patterson was arrested after the victim came to the Sheriff’s Office to report an altercation. Deputies immediately noted that the woman had injuries to her face.

The woman told deputies that she and Patterson had gotten into a physical altercation about an hour before, which had started earlier in the evening when she was trying to pay their bills online with her phone and had asked Patterson to be quiet.

She said this upset him, and he became verbally aggressive. She said she left the house and went for a walk, and when she returned home they continued arguing. She said that since he was still upset, she threw a small hand held vacuum at him which she believes struck the oven.

She said Patterson then became extremely physical with her in the kitchen and charged toward her. She said he began strangling her and slamming her against the wall. While he was on top of her, she said she lost consciousness.

She said she woke up to Patterson pouring a bottle of water on her face and smacking her in the face, saying “wake up, wake up.”

Deputies noted she had what appeared to be fresh lacerations on her face. When they asked if she had been hit in the face by Patterson, she said she wasn’t sure because she blacked out. She said all she remembered was gasping for air while Patterson was choking her.

Deputies noted she had a laceration between her eyes, one on the bridge of her nose and what appeared to be a freshly bruised right eye. She also had dried blood in the corner of her mouth, and the front gum line of her mouth was cut open. She had marks around her neck that were consistent with being choked, the arrest report states.

She said during the assault she had attempted to leave the residence, but was blocked by Patterson numerous times by leaning his body weight against the front door and the door in the laundry room, the arrest report states.

She told him she was going to call the police, at which point he took her phone. She said she then went to the bathroom and waited until it was quiet. When she thought Patterson had left, she came out of the bathroom to find him still in the residence, so she ran to the front bedroom and climbed through the bedroom window.

Deputies located Patterson at a bar on Winnie Lane, who became verbally aggressive with them almost immediately, the arrest report states.

Outside after he had been handcuffed, Patterson told deputies he was unaware of any injuries to the victim, but that he had pinned her to the floor and held her down. Deputies noted he had scratch marks on his face, and when asked how he got them, he said it was from the victim scratching him.

He continued to state he never hit her, but each time deputies asked about her injuries, he said he loves her and he would never do anything to harm her. He said he was holding her down and trying to defend himself. The report stated that Patterson is 300 pounds, and the victim was 130 pounds.

He was taken to the Carson City Jail and booked without incident. Bail: $27,000

In other arrests:
— A 27-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 3300 block of Highway 50 East early Sunday morning for felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with a suspended license, driving with fictitious plates, and violating his suspended sentence.

Austin Wayne Rivers was arrested after deputies ran the license plate of a vehicle waiting at a stop light to turn onto Airport Road. The vehicle in question was a Dodge pick up truck, but the plates came back as being registered to a Honda, according to the arrest report.

Rivers was out of his vehicle when deputies made contact with him, and he said there was something wrong with his truck and he was checking on the engine. Deputies asked him why his license plate was registered to a Honda when his truck was a Dodge. He told them his girlfriend took care of the registration so he wasn’t sure why that would be the case, the arrest report states.

Deputies conducted a wants and warrants check, and dispatch advised Rivers had a suspended driver’s license and probation with DAS. The vehicle’s registration also came back as being suspended as of 2017.

While waiting for a tow truck to come and take the vehicle, deputies located what they believed to be a meth pipe in the center console with what appeared to be burned residue. The residue came back with a presumptive positive for amphetamine.

DAS advised they wanted a hold to be placed on Rivers. Rivers told deputies he was aware the pipe was inside the vehicle but stated the pipe was not his.

He was booked without incident. Bail: $5,371; $1,000 cash only.

— A 51-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of Desatoya and Fairview Drive early Sunday morning for a DUI after he attempted to drive through a police blockade with live power lines across the road.

Deputies were in the area investigating a hit and run crash, which had resulted in an active power line being knocked down. The power lines had yet to be neutralized and were scattered in the area.

Deputies had parked their vehicle in the middle of the road with emergency lights activated, indicating the road was closed, with a Carson City Fire Truck parked directly behind the vehicle.

While sitting inside the vehicle, deputies observed a vehicle trying to maneuver in between the front of the firetruck and the rear of the patrol vehicle. According to the report, the vehicle was approximately 1 to 2 feet from striking the rear of the patrol vehicle.

Deputies approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver, advising him the road was clearly closed and he needed to turn around. The man pointed towards Fairview Drive and said something to the effect of “I’m just going,” to which the deputies responded they didn’t care where he was trying to go, he needed to turn around.

The man continued to make statements deputies had trouble understanding due to this thick slurred speech. Deputies asked the man if he had been drinking, to which he replied he had had 3-5 beers at a bar.

The man was unable to follow instructions on how to properly provide a preliminary breath test sample, and after four attempts deputies decided to place the man under arrest due to his slow and slurred speech, the odor of an alcoholic beverage and the man’s admission to having been drinking.

While taking photos of the vehicle, deputies discovered the front driver side tire was flat from an unknown cause. After taking photos, deputies spoke with the man again who was finally able to provide a partial PBT sample which gave a .208 percent breath alcohol content.

He was transported to the jail without incident. Bail: $1,137

— A 60-year-old man was arrested in the area of Airport Road and Menlo Drive after he allegedly exited a vehicle involved in a non-injury crash and urinated on the sidewalk.

The man was charged with indecent conduct after deputies were dispatched to the area of Airport and Menlo on a report of a non-injury vehicle crash. A car had gone off the roadway and became stuck in the snow.

Deputies made contact with the man, who was the passenger in the vehicle, and appeared to be highly intoxicated. His eyes were red and watery and his speech was slurred, according to the report.

A woman was standing a short distance away, and deputies made contact with her. She said she had witnessed the crash, and she had approached the vehicle to make sure the occupants were OK. She said it was obvious to her that both of the occupants were intoxicated. She said the passenger of the vehicle, the 60-year-old man, stepped out of the car and urinated on the sidewalk in front of the vehicle before getting back inside.

He was transported without incident. Bail: $637.

— A 53-year-old Carson City woman was arrested in the area of 5th Street and Hells Bells Road for parole and probation violation after being found in a vehicle with a man she was ordered to have no contact with.

Deputies pulled the vehicle over after recognizing the driver, who deputies knew to have two felony warrants issued for his arrest.

Parole and Probation requested a hold on the woman for violating her conditions, and she was transported to the jail without incident. No bail hold.

— A 43-year-old transient man was arrested in a Highway 50 East casino Sunday morning for trespassing.

The man was arrested after a call came in reporting an unwanted subject. However, by the time deputies arrived, the man had already left and gone into another nearby casino.

Deputies made contact with the subject at the other casino and told him he had been trespassed from the previous casino. According to the report the man was highly intoxicated, and had watery eyes and slurred speech, and was swaying while standing.

Employees at the second casino said he was behaving in their casino and he could stay. Deputies advised the man he would not be allowed to return to the first casino, and the man said he understood.

While deputies conducted a walkthrough of the second casino, however, they saw the man leave the second casino and walk directly back to the first.

He was arrested for trespassing, and provided a preliminary breath test of .305 percent.

He was booked without incident. Bail: $238.

— A transient man was arrested Saturday afternoon for trespassing at a local casino.

Deputies were dispatched to the casino in reference to an unwanted subject. Staff said a guest in a hotel room was refusing to leave, despite it being two hours past check out.

Deputies made contact with the subject who was highly intoxicated. Deputies told him he needed to collect his property and leave. The man then began to take off his jacket and shirt instead of collecting his things.

He was arrested for trespassing. He also provided a PBT which resulted in a .208 percent breath alcohol content. Bail: $637.

— A 56-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of Hells Bells Road and Carson River Road for violation of bail conditions, a felony, and felony possession of controlled substance.
