Carson City to host first annual Source Water Assessment Day with public hike, tours of Quill Treatment Facility
Carson City Public Works, in conjunction with River Wranglers, Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space, and the Carson Water Subconservancy District are hosting the first annual Carson City Source Water Assessment Day on September 10th from 10am to noon.
This event is geared toward families and kids of all ages.
The event will be held in the new North Kings Canyon parking area at the top of Kings Canyon Road and kicks off at 10am and goes until noon.
Following the hike, the Quill treatment plant will be open for public tours from 11:30am – 12pm.
The goal for the event is to bring community awareness/education to the surface water sources of drinking water for Carson City in a fun and interactive way.
After a brief talk by City utility officials, participants will be invited to walk to the North Kings Canyon intake structure (an approximately 200 yd walk from the parking area along a dirt road).
There, River Wranglers will lead water quality sampling using their fun and interactive test kits.
Participants will learn about the sources of the water that is routed to the Quill plant for treatment, then put into pipes for delivery to Carson City homes.
The event will host a variety of exciting family friendly booths where kids can experiment with watershed and flood models and learn about protecting and preserving their drinking water.
This event is partially funded by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) Source Water Protection Program and a Clean Water Act 319(h) Nonpoint Source Program which work to protect and enhance sources of drinking water and surface waters of the State by employing source water and watershed planning and public outreach.
