Five arrested after Saturday night melee at Fuji Park
A disturbance call during a party at Fuji Park in Carson City led to the arrests Saturday of five people after a near-riot broke out in which officers were punched and kicked by several suspects, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. Officers from Douglas County and the Nevada Highway Patrol were called in as backup to control the melee.
Adam Ortega, 21, of Carson City faces the most serious charge of felony assault after allegedly kicking an officer and knocking her to the ground. His bail was set at $22,500. Other officers report being randomly punched in the head and face and one suspect was hit by an officer, who was hitting him and resisting arrest. According to dispatch via police scanner, officers deployed pepper spray and at least one officer was treated for injuries by the Carson City Fire Department.
According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to Fuji Park at around 11:30 p.m. after security advised they had detained a man for returning to an event in which he had been told to leave earlier.
Deputies arrived and took the man into custody but not before they were met by a hostile crowd who began yelling at deputies. One 22-year-old Carson City man, arrested on gross misdemeanor charge of battery on an officer, rallied partygoers to “f*** these guys up,” according to the arrest report. The man then reached for the officer’s gun while another, unknown partygoer, punched the officer in the head several times. The 22-year-old was detained and placed into a patrol vehicle.
As the officer detained the man who attempted to grab the gun, a female deputy was kicked and knocked to the ground. This happened after the officer was attempting to stop a 21-year-old woman from making the situation worse by prompting others to fight with officers.
The 21-year-old woman pushed her cell phone camera in the faces of deputies, while they were trying to deal with people who were fighting them. The woman told the officers “you can’t do that. I’m recording this.” She was then observed stepping back into the crowd, stating “they can’t do this” which, in turn, incited the crowd to grow angry and more combative.
The officer attempted to detain the 21-year-old woman, but was elbowed in the chest and scratched in the arm. The woman was placed into custody for inciting a riot, battery on a peace officer and resisting arrest with violence. As she was being arrested, two men attempted to pull the detained 21-year-old woman away from the female deputy, in which the officer was then kicked to the ground, the arrest report states. Both men were arrested, with Adam Ortega identified as the the one doing the kicking.
Also arrested in the incident was a 48-year-old man on a gross misdemeanor charge of battery on an officer after he allegedly took swings at one officer, punching him in the face and chest, and a 19-year-old man for misdemeanor violation of alternative sentencing and minor consuming.
