Carson City Jail inmate dies after being admitted to hospital Thursday for medical emergency
A 42-year-old Carson City Jail inmate, who was admitted to the hospital on Thursday after suffering a medical emergency, died early Sunday morning, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
In a notice is in accordance with NRS 211.020 and NRS 211.030 to advise of an inmate death in the Carson City Jail, inmate Michael Scott McElfish was pronounced dead at 3:40 a.m. at Carson Tahoe Health. His death happened three days after he suffered a medical emergency while the custody in the facility.
According to a news release issued Sunday from the Carson City Sheriff's Office, On August 20, 2020, McElfish complained to a Detention Deputy of being sick while he was being housed in a general population Intake Pod. The inmate was immediately moved, escorted to an observation safety cell in the booking area.
On-duty medical staff was informed of the incident and actions taken. A medical team conducted a check on the inmate shortly after he was moved and found him unresponsive. The medical team entered the cell and determined the inmate to be unconscious and not breathing. The inmate was pulled from his cell and medical staff performed lifesaving efforts, the news release states.
CPR was administered by medical staff and deputies, and an AED was administered on the patient. Carson Fire & Paramedics arrived on scene and took over treatment efforts, the news release states.
McElfish was transported to Carson Tahoe Hospital, where on August 23, 2020 he died, according to the news release.
In accordance with “In Custody Death” protocol, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the inmate’s death, assisted by the Carson City Investigations Division and Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on August 24, 2020 by the Washoe County Medical Examiner.
McElfish was in custody at the jail for charges of violation of a domestic temporary protection order and making a false statement, obstructing a peace officer.
