Rock Steady Boxing in Carson City announces August Boxer of the Month
Rock Steady Boxing Northern Nevada, a Carson City-based exercise program for persons suffering from Parkinson's Disease, has named club member Ron Olson as its August Boxer of the Month.
Here is his story:
"Throughout the first 60 years of my life I was very fortunate not to have any serious health problems.
"That would change.
"At the age of 61, I had a heart attack. It required three stints.
"Still, I was lucky.
"There was no major damage to my heart and it was the wake up call I needed to get me into a routine exercise program. I joined a local athletic club.
"Although I didn’t know it at the time, the exercise program was probably the best thing I could be doing, not only for my heart, but for what was ahead for me.
"During those years, I developed more and more symptoms that pointed toward Parkinson’s.
"By the time I was in my seventies I had seen my internist, a psychiatrist, and two neurologists about my symptoms.
"There was no longer any doubt in any of their minds that I had Parkinson’s. I had to accept it.
"In January 2015, I was fortunate again.
"A friend told my wife about a show she had seen on CBS TV with Leslie Stahl. She recorded the program for us to watch.
"My excitement for the Rock Steady Boxing program was big until I found out the only RSB program in Nevada at the time was in Las Vegas.
"However, I soon heard that some dedicated people in the Carson City area had recently (December 2014) started a RSB program.
"I joined the Carson City RSB program in February 2015, and from my first class, I knew this was the place for me to be.
"Since then Cisco Rodriguez has expanded the program to Reno.
"Nina Vogel with her Physical Therapy background, and Cisco with his boxing background, are a perfect combination to lead this program.
"They have the ability to encourage those with a wide range of physical and mental Parkinson symptoms to work hard and feel good about their accomplishments.
"Yet it's their love of the job and for each and every one of us that makes them special.
"Also, you would have look a long while to find a more supportive and friendly group of participants. This includes their spouses and other dedicated caregivers.
"My thanks to the Northern Nevada Rock Steady Boxing program. It has played a major role in allowing me to continue to participate and enjoy most of my favorite activities."
