NNDA names Philip Cowee as Executive Director; will lead economic development of Nevada’s Sierra region

CARSON CITY — Northern Nevada Development Authority announced Wednesday that Philip “Phil” Cowee has been selected as the organization’s new Executive Director. Mr. Cowee replaces Robert Hooper who recently retired after leading NNDA for 12 years.

A businessman and sixth-generation Nevadan, Mr. Cowee has over 20 years of professional experience developing properties and running businesses in Lyon County. Most recently, from November 2017 to January 2021, he was the State Director of USDA Rural Development in Nevada.

Prior to that, Mr. Cowee entitled and developed many commercial and industrial projects and led the Lyon County School District (LCSD) as Finance Director from 2012-2016. Recently, he was elected to the LCSD Board and currently serves as Board Clerk.

Mr. Cowee is also a member of the school district’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) Committee that coordinates and collaborates with the Nevada Department of Education CTE Program. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration-Accounting from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Mr. Cowee said, “It is a great honor to have been selected to serve the communities of Nevada’s Sierra Region. I look forward to continuing the work Rob started to recruit new business to the region, while nurturing current companies to expand into a thriving economy. We are fortunate to have an array of community partners dedicated to developing a workforce to fill the demand of these prospering businesses.”

“The NNDA Executive Board looks forward to working with Mr. Cowee as Nevada and our Sierra Region navigate economic recovery from the pandemic,” said Greg Dye, Chair, NNDA Executive Board. “Workforce development and obtainable workforce housing are priorities locally and statewide. Phil’s experience in both areas can help NNDA address the needs of Sierra Region employers and residents.”

Since 2010, NNDA has assisted 116 companies with relocation and expansion. Its economic development efforts have generated over 5,000 jobs and more than $2 billion total economic impact for the Sierra Region.

On Friday, June 28, the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team conducted a traffic stop that yielded more than 11 pounds of fentanyl.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports and cases from citizens scammed during fraudulent business transactions.

The suspect in the shooting of two Silver Springs, NV residents on June 26, 2024 has been positively identified as 53 year old Silver Springs resident Stephen Thomas Shytle. At this time, Shytle’s whereabouts are unknown.

Just before noon a fire was reported on BLM land in Brunswick Canyon.

According to Fire Chief Sean Slamon, it is a vegetation fire in a remote part of Brunswick Canyon.

At approximately 5:30 PM on June 26, 2024 the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Central Command Patrol Squad responded to the Lahontan State Park Ranger Station at Lake Lahontan for a report of an adult male subject who had been shot multiple times. Upon arrival, deputies learned that the shooting took place at a residence in the 3900 block of Birch Street in Silver Springs.

The Douglas County Commissioners approved a special use permit for a Beer Garden at Zephyr Cove Resort over the 4th of July weekend. The Pony Express returned to the capital city Wednesday, making its annual re-ride across the West. 
This year, as an even-numbered year, the re-ride began in St. Joseph Missouri on June 17 and will continue east into California.
