Country music artists prepare for Saturday benefit concert
Country music star Ty Herndon along with Rednex, headlining acts for Saturday's Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival, were in Carson City Friday afternoon doing sound checks on the stage set up at Battle Born Harley Davidson.
For Herndon, a Grammy-nominated and Dove Award-winning country music recording artist, this week's trip is sort of a homecoming.
"We were regulars at the Nugget," he said Friday. "We used to come over here (to Carson City) and eat."
But this visit is different.
Herndon takes the stage Saturday night as a headlining act in a concert played to honor fallen Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl G. Howell, a nine-year veteran of the department who was killed in the line of duty on Aug. 15, 2015.
"I knew that Carson City was somewhere in my heart," Herndon said. "Any time you get to pay it forward, it's my favorite music."
While Herndon is a returning visitor to Northern Nevada, members of Rednex are completely new to the Silver State and America.
This week marks the Country Electric Pop group's first visit ever to the United States.
"This is our first show in America," said band member Spades, who is from Germany and Finland. "We've never played in America before."
So far, Rednex members said they have found their visit to the United States and Northern Nevada, in particular, exciting.
"This has been just a great experience," said band member Misty Mae, who is from Sweden.
The band said it's honored to be playing their first American concert in Carson City to benefit Howell's family.
"This is such a great cause and it couldn't be better," said band member Ace, also from Sweden. "It's going to be a fun show."
Rednex band members said they hope everyone coming out to Saturday's concert will share in the joy of the music festival.
"We're here to have a good time and celebrate life," Spades said. "We think that's what is most important about tomorrow."
Although the headlining acts don't perform until Saturday evening, the music festival spans a full day with an all-day lineup of performances by local, regional and nationally recognized artists.
The festival opens at 9 a.m. Saturay. Herndon, Rednex and acclaimed reggae artist Prezident Brown are the event's headliners, which are scheduled to perform after 7 p.m.
Las Vegas comedian and Larry The Cable Guy impersonator Tom Daw will also be a featured act on stage, while film and television actor Patrick Kilpatrick serves as the event's master of ceremonies.
The concert runs until midnight Sunday morning.
There will also be family-friendly activities on site at Battle Born Harley Davidson, 2900 Research Way in Carson City.
