Latin cultures represented at annual church youth program benefit at Carson City's Mills Park
The smoke cleared just in time for Cross Point Ministry’s annual barbecue and volleyball tournament at Mills Park on Saturday.
Event coordinator and youth leader Luis Hernandez said the gathering is hosted by the youth program at CPM.
Members involved at the church formed volleyball teams within the young adult program and even invited their friends from outside the church to come out and play in the double elimination tournament.
“It’s just a time to come out, have some fun, 'cause churches have fun, too,” Hernandez said. “If we can reach out to the community and do other things, too, like hold a service out here. Sometimes people are intimidated and think it’s boring, but we also do fun things, like going to play volleyball.”
Hernandez said food being served at the event included meat tacos, Mexidilias, Mexican snacks and candy, and agua frescas, or fruit water. Latin cultures represented at the event ranged from Mexican to El Salvadorian to Guatemalan.
The CPM youth program provided the medals and trophies for participants and winning team of the volleyball tournament.
