Pedestrian struck and killed by pickup, two Douglas sheriff's patrol cars Sunday near Gardnerville
A man standing on Highway 395 in the area of Spring Valley Drive south of Gardnerville was struck and killed by a pickup and then two on-duty Douglas County sheriff's patrol vehicles late Sunday night, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Reported to NHP at 10:45 p.m., troopers were dispatched to the accident involving an unidentified adult male pedestrian being struck by multiple vehicles, said Trooper Dave Gibson.
The preliminary crash investigation details learned so far indicate the man was said to be standing in the southbound travel lane of Highway 395 when he was struck by a pickup that was traveling southbound. After being struck, the victim was thrown into the northbound travel lane of Highway 395. After striking the male the pickup truck pulled to the right shoulder and stopped.
At that time two Douglas County Sheriff’s patrol vehicles that were on duty were traveling northbound in the same area and did not see the pedestrian and both struck him in the northbound travel lane. All vehicles stopped in an attempt to render aid and the Sheriff’s deputies secured the scene and contacted emergency personnel to respond. The male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The drivers’ of the all the vehicles involved are cooperating with law enforcement during their investigation. Alcohol or any other means of impairment are not a factor for the cause of the accident. The speed limit in this area of 395 is 55 miles per hour and there is no roadway lighting. The accident is still under investigation and no names are being release at this time until next of the kin for the deceased has been notified and the investigation is completed.

In light of this recent accident the NHP would like to take the time to remind motorists to be cautious around pedestrians and bicyclists when driving after dark on poorly lit highways. The same is said for pedestrian and bicyclists to share the road and be cautious when on the highway at night time.
