USAF Band presents Hot Jazz in this cool town
Next Friday night, August 17, beginning at 6 p.m., the cool Carson City Community Center will be swinging as the hot USAF Band of the Golden West Commanders Jazz Ensemble performs tunes from some of the greatest swing bands of all times.
The audience will be tapping toes to the sounds of the big band era when Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Count Basie and more enthralled audiences all over the world as war raged around them.
On June 12, 1943, at the height of the war, President Franklin D. Roosevelt wrote, “Entertainment is always a national asset. Invaluable in time of peace, it is indispensable in wartime. All those who are working in the entertainment industry are building and maintaining national morale both on the battlefront and on the home front.”
For those who served in or remember World War II, the concert will be a trip down memory lane. For the rest of us, it will be a musical history lesson of a bygone era.
Glenn Miller is credited with changing forever the music played by military bands as his swing music was designed to boost troop morale. Woody Herman is credited with creating the blues sound. Duke Ellington led the best-known orchestra in the history of jazz. Count Basie was known for creating a “jumping beat.” Dizzy Gillespie specialized in be-bop. All were amazing musicians and band leaders and their unique sounds will be recreated for you by the 20-member energetic group of highly-trained professional musicians that form the Commander Jazz Ensemble.
The group is part of the USAF Band of the Golden West stationed at Travis Air Force in California and has thrilled local audiences in the past. This event is part of the Annual Jazz & Beyond Carson City Music Festival.
The free concert is sponsored by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and the Carson City Parks & Recreation Department.
Tickets may be picked up at the Carson City Chamber, 1900 S. Carson Street (on the site of the Nevada State Railroad Museum) Monday-Friday between 8:30 am – 5 pm.
Please call 882-1565 to make certain of ticket availability.
