Carson City actor returns home for local premier of first feature film starring role
Carson City native Grant Davis, 20, stars in the musical film, "Something Like Summer," the award-winning new movie that has won raves on the 2017 film festival circuit, including prominent engagements in Sydney, Australia; Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; Los Angeles, San Diego, Philadelphia and Miami.
Davis will appear in person at the movie's Carson City premiere on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at the Jukebox Film Festival. Film screening is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
Davis will participate in an audience question-and-answer session after the screening.
Davis, who sings four songs in the film, is also performing a free hometown concert. He will take the stage at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the Third Street Stage (on Bob McFadden Plaza) in downtown Carson City, where he will perform popular hits, as well as songs from the film as well as his debut album.
The concert is free and open to the public, no tickets are required for entry, and music fans of all ages are encouraged to attend.
Davis was born in Carson City and was graduated from Silver State Charter School in 2014. His parents are Angela and Clay Davis of Carson City. Clay is proprietor of Clay Davis Roofing.
His maternal grandparents, Carol and Vaughn Williams, were also longtime Northern Nevada residents.
Davis was anxious for "Something Like Summer" to be accepted at Carson City's Jukebox Festival so his grandparents would have an opportunity to see the film as his grandmother was gravely ill. Davis' grandmother died June 28, and to compound the grief, his maternal grandfather died July 27.
Carol and Vaughn Williams had a 65-year marriage. The recent loss of both grandparents has increased the emotional significance of Davis' homecoming for the film premiere and concert.
"I got the news we were accepted into the festival two days before my grandfather’s passing,” Davis said. “I had an understanding that he was going fast and was overjoyed to get to share this last memory with him. But he had other plans and wanted to be able to watch the film with my grandma by his side."
"Something Like Summer" is the musical film adaption of the award-winning 2010 novel written by Jay Bell. The young-adult themed story examines the journey of two Texas teenage boys who have fallen in love with each other.
The film is booked at upcoming festivals, including Durban, South Africa. The book has become a phenomenon, spawning eight additional novels penned by Bell that examine the extended family tree of the story's characters.
The movie has been embraced by a broad and diverse audience, something relatable to all human beings not simply those in the LGBT communities.
During his years in Carson City, Grant Davis participated as lead actor in productions at the Brewery Arts Center, Wild Horse Theater, Youth Theater Carson City, and WMNTC.
Davis resides in Los Angeles, the city where he moved at age 18 to pursue acting full time.
