Smoke from regional fires settles around Carson City
Smoke from several fires burning regionally has drifted into the Carson City area, producing a noticeable haze that is affecting air quality to a degree.
An official with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said most of the smoke in Carson City is from a combination of four fires currently burning north of Reno.
Some of the smoke may also have drifted up from the Sand Fire, still burning in the Santa Clarita area of Southern California, the NWS said Saturday.
Smoke may be a little thicker at night and in the mornings while the fires are still burning, because the air settles overnight, the NWS said, but the haze should also thin out during the day when the fires are more active and are upwind of Carson City.
Although the NWS has not issued any air quality alerts yet for Northern Nevada, the current air quality index (AQI) rating for Carson City is 74, which is in the moderate range, the Washoe County Air Quality Management Division in Reno reported. This means those sensitive to smoke should not be subject to prolonged exposure or heavy exertion outside.
The forecast for Sunday also calls for a moderate AQI rating, Washoe County reported.
Red flag fire warnings also remain in effect for much of the region.
