Carson City sheriff's log: Man allegedly steals tequila at Walmart, tries to return it for refund
A 36-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony burglary and obtaining money under false pretenses after allegedly stealing a bottle of tequila and then attempting to get a refund, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
George Steven Hudson was arrested at the Walmart store in the 3200 block of South Carson Street.
According to the arrest report, Hudson is suspected of stealing a bottle of Jose Cuervo Tequila Silver from the liquor section at the Walmart store located on Topsy Lane in Douglas County.
Loss prevention said he entered the store at around 6:43 p.m., grabbed the liquor and attempted to get a refund with a fraudulent receipt. He was denied a refund and left the store with the bottle he had taken without purchasing it.
Security alerted loss prevention at the Market Street store and supplied surveillance photos. At 9:46 p.m. Hudson entered the Market Street store with the bottle of tequila as seen in the photos from the Topsy Lane store. He was able to obtain a refund for the Jose Cuervo Tequila Silver in the amount of $14.22. The receipt used to perform the refund transaction did not match the UPC merchandise number for the bottle that he had refunded.
Hudson was read his Miranda rights and stated he understood them and agreed to speak. The arresting deputy asked him why the Topsy Lane Walmart would not perform the refund. Hudson said the store refused it because the UPC label did not match the one on the receipt he provided. He was unable to explain how he purchased the Jose Cuervo and changed his version of how he purchased it several times, the arrest report states. Bail: $20,000.
