Apartment complex planned for vacant lot near mall would bring nearly 250 units to Carson City
The long-vacant lot near the Carson Mall and Red’s Old 395 Grill is getting a new life with with a new apartment complex that will provide housing to nearly 250 families.
It’s no secret that Carson City, along with the rest of the region, is suffering from a lack of housing, but this year there are numerous projects to help mitigate those issues, from the apartments being built above the Casino Fandango, to the townhomes on Highway 50 near Mills Park, to the apartments still under construction near the Market Street Walmart.
Joining the new construction will be the 248-unit apartment complex that will be built in the vacant lot on Stewart an 9th, which once housed Copeland Lumber and has stood vacant since it was demolished in 2016.
The proposed five-story complex will cover 3.4 acres, and will include 20 studio apartments, 136 one-bedroom apartments, and 92 two-bedroom apartments, as well as a parking garage and a pool.
The property was sold on July 1, but the property will need a special use permit approved by the Planning Commission. The special use permit is required due to a zoning issue, in so far that the project is residential-only and the lot was zoned for downtown mixed-use.
It is unknown at this time when the project is slated to be completed.
