Carson City arrests: Caretaker jailed for suspicion of felony battery on 95-year-old woman
A Carson City man was arrested Monday for felony suspicion of domestic battery with substantial bodily harm after allegedly pushing a 95-year-old woman who was in his care, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
James Caldwell, 62, was taken into custody at 8:30 p.m. in the 2900 block of Silver Stream Drive. The domestic battery charge also comes with an elder abuse enhancement.
According to the arrest report, deputies were called after the Carson City Fire Department contacted them regarding an elderly woman they were treating.
Deputies learned the 95-year-old woman had allegedly been knocked to the ground by Caldwell, her live in caretaker. The woman said she and the man were in a verbal argument when Caldwell pushed her and she fell to the floor, striking her head and causing the area of her right eyebrow and right cheek to be injured.
The woman was transported to Carson Tahoe Hospital for treatment and admission, in which stitches were required to seal wounds, the arrest report states.
A deputy spoke with the suspect who had an overwhelming odor of alcohol coming from his person, the arrest report states. He had watery eyes and his speech was slurred. He had blood on his left hand and forearm. A deputy asked the man what happened and how the woman was injured.
The man yelled and cussed at the officer and said he and the woman were arguing about damage done to the home and that he didn’t mean to hurt her, the arrest report states.
The suspect provided a preliminary breath sample with a .213. He was arrested and taken to jail. Bail: $20,000.
In other arrests:
— A 21-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Tuesday morning for felony suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor domestic battery, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Jose Elias Vargas was taken into custody at 12:32 a.m. in the 2000 block of Lone Mountain Drive after allegedly threatening the victim with a pistol. He admitted to pulling the victim’s hair and slapping her. A pistol was recovered after he gave deputies verbal permission to enter the apartment and recover the pistol. Bail: $23,000.
— A 19-year-old Carson City man was booked into jail Monday, 10:10 p.m. for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued June 6, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $3,000.
— A 60-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday, 6:40 p.m. in the 3200 block of Imperial Way for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI.
According to the arrest report, a sergeant attempted to stop a vehicle for suspicion of driving under the influence. The man would not stop and the vehicle continued driving north on Imperial Way to a residence. The man was also continuously honking his horn.
A deputy spoke with the man was still sitting in his car at the residence. The officer asked the man if he had been drinking. The man told the officer he had a couple beers, the arrest report states.
The suspect was asked to exit the vehicle. He was unsteady on his feet and his speech was slurred. During the questions the man stated he had been drinking beer and whiskey, telling the deputy he had messed up. He showed signs of impairment on field sobriety tests, failing the tests. He agreed to an evidentiary blood sample. Bail: $1,137.
— A 37-year-old Carson City woman was booked into jail Monday, 2:48 p.m. for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued in October 2016 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $5,000.
— A 35-year-old Silver Springs woman was booked into jail Monday, 2:52 pm. for misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued Feb. 9, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $500.
— An 18-year-old Carson City man was booked into jail Monday, 11:10 a.m. for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued Jan. 17, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $500.
— A 38-year-old Reno man was booked into jail Monday, 11:12 a.m. for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant issued May 3, 2017 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $3,000.
