Cooling station opens at Partnership Carson City for homeless, those without AC
Night off the Streets, an advocacy group for Carson City's homeless, will open a cooling station beginning Wednesday.
The cooling station will be from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Partnership Carson City located in the Frontier Plaza shopping center, 1925 N Carson St, Carson City.
According to NOTS president and founder Deacon Craig LaGier, the station is open to anyone, especially the homeless or for those without air conditioning or cooling fans. There will be water and snacks available.
The cooling station at Partnership Carson City will be open through the duration of the heat wave.
The National Weather Service has extended its Excessive Heat Warning through until Saturday morning. However, the station will be available if daytime temperatures remain near or over 100, LaGier said.
He noted that NOTS has been out working with the homeless, providing them water and guiding them to areas of shade.
"It's been tough out there. Yesterday I took a thermometer and placed it on the pavement. It was 148 degrees," he said.
Temperatures are expected to be around 100 or more through at least Friday, forecasters said, with some relief beginning Sunday.
