What Works: Cleaning up the bad deals in life
No matter how good you are at this thing called life, at one time or another, you may have agreed on a bad deal. This could be any type of deal. It could be a relationship that went south. You could have a bad deal with a vendor for your business. Or, maybe, you accepted a job you without asking enough questions and you feel stuck.
Whatever it is, bad deals create pain. Sometimes, they create pain for you and the other party.
The question is, what do you do about them?
Become aware: The first step to any type of evaluation is to take an inventory. What deals do you have in your life? Write them down and place a score to them. 5 means it’s an amazing deal and its working well. 1 means you would get out of the deal today if you could.
Review your low scoring deals: Ask yourself why you scored the way you did. If you are scoring a vendor relationship at a 2, is it because you believe you could get better service, pay less, or get better quality elsewhere? Review your contracts associated with your deals. If you need help, seek legal advice.
Plan a course of action: Now that you know the reality of the situation, what are you going to do about it? Collect the facts and approach your bad deals one at a time. Maybe a little tweak in the relationship is needed. Maybe the deal needs to end. Plan the action and then ...
Take action: Again, if the deal is something you need a lawyer about, get one. I’m not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. I’m simply a business coach who has seen this situation replay itself many times. I’ve also been in the situation itself. Action may be as simple has having a conversation and restructuring the deal. But, if it hurts enough, taking your head out of the sand can be a real pain reliever.
Bad deals happen. It’s important you are gentle with yourself for making the bad deal. Some of the best learning comes through making mistakes. We all make them. It’s part of being human. Shame keeps us in bad deals as much as fear does. Either one creates more pain than is necessary.
