Toxic algae suspected at Washoe Lake, Lahontan Reservoir; pets, swimmers should stay away
Washoe Lake State Park is under a HAB (harmful algae boom) watch due to the presence of what might be toxic algae.
As we continue to experience these high summer heats, the bodies of water in our area are becoming primed for algae blooms. While algae often is not a concern on its own, it’s the toxic algae that can make pets, wildlife, and even humans very ill.
Toxic algae can cause serious health issues, according to the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection, who is currently doing HAB testing at a number of sites.
The results of those tests should be returning soon, according to NDEP.
While not all toxic algae is easily perceptible, others make detection easy: if water looks discolored or has a bad smell, keep away. It’s especially harmful for pets who enjoy splashing in and, most importantly, drinking from these bodies of water.
In addition to Washoe Lake, Virginia Lake in Reno and the Lahontan Reservoir in Lyon County are also under HAB watch. Visitors should steer clear until testing is returned.
There have also been social media posts about potential HABs in Lake Tahoe. More on that in a separate report.
