Ceremony at capitol Friday to honor 100th anniversary of USS Nevada launch
On Friday, July 11, the Nevada State Museum, the Reno Navy League and the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission will re-dedicate a plaque at the USS Nevada Memorial on the Capitol Grounds in Carson City. A reception honoring the battleship USS Nevada and her fallen crew will follow in Old Assembly Chambers.
The Battleship USS Nevada was launched on July 11, 1914. The USS Nevada is one of the most famous battleships in the history of the United States Navy. Serving in both World Wars, it was the only battleship present at Pearl Harbor, Normandy D-Day Invasion, Okinawa and Iwo Jima. The new plaque honors the crewman who died while serving on battleship during its naval career.
The commissioning ceremony will take place on front steps of the Nevada State Capitol Building at 9:30 a.m.m 101 N. Carson Street, Carson City and will feature remarks from dignitaries and community members. Guests include: David Stephenson, Chief of the Boat USS Nevada (SSBN 733) (Blue); Judge Chuck Weller, a Reno Navy League Historian; Bud Hicks, Commissioner for the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission; Ellyn Mackenzie, retired Vaughn Middle School teacher who’s class raised funds for the original plaque, Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell will lead the pledge of allegiance and Senator Greg Bower, who will deliver Governor Sandoval’s proclamation for “Battleship Nevada Day”.
Following the ceremony there will be an unveiling of the new plaque that will take place at the USS Nevada Memorial at the Southeast corner of the Capitol Building. Photo opportunities will be available. The closing reception taking place in the Old Assembly Chambers will feature Navy artwork by Wayne Scarpici, the Halsey Saddle and other naval artifacts.
