Marlette-Hobart backcountry update
By the Nevada Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources
We have finally had some significant snowmelt and can now update access and trail conditions into Marlette-Hobart Backcountry.
North Canyon and Marlette Lake Basin
North Canyon is free of snow until one reaches Marlette Saddle at the 4 mile mark. The saddle still has a 150-200 ft long snowdrift blocking the road. The rest of the road down to the lake is clear for hiking/biking with a few remaining drifts on over to the dam and Flume trail.
Marlette Trail
Clear to saddle – snow covered from there down to Lake – hikers should switch to the road here until the snow retreats – horses not recommended beyond Marlette saddle due to the snowdrift at the saddle.
Tunnel Creek Road
Road mostly clear up to the north end of the Flume Trail and Twin Lakes.
Flume Trail
The trail is clear of snow. There are a few obstacles – 5 downed trees and a large rock, but the way can be found around them until crews are able to remove them later in July.
Tahoe Rim Trail
The high country (and the trails) will be under snow until late in July. Sections of north facing trail could be under snow into August. By mid July travel on the Rim Trail will begin to be more possible(to find and stay on) as sections of trail open up between drifts and snowbanks remaining from the heavy winter snow. If you lose the trail due to snow, do not attempt to continue on unless you have good navigational skills – trace your footprints back to where you left the trail. Always let someone know your travel plans before venturing out.
Laxalt property access via North Canyon
The current obstacles to access are 1. The large snowdrift blocking Marlette Saddle – NDOW may be attempting to breach this drift next week to gain access into Marlette Lk to do the annual spawning. 2. The east side of Marlette Lake has a half dozen downed trees and a large snowdrift blocking the way. We hope for clearance by mid July.
Laxalt property access via Lakeview
The roadway is clear to Hobart reservoir. Sunflower Hill is closed due to soft conditions and heavy, deep, continuous snow in the upper ½ mile. Buildings and Grounds estimates 2 weeks at least to open this corridor.
