Sheriff's Office investigates credit card skimming device discovered at Carson City business
UPDATE: Carson City Sheriff's Office is investigating a credit card skimmer device discovered Thursday at an East Carson City business.
At 5:15 p.m., Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call of a credit card skim device in a credit card machine. The sheriff's office did not immediately release the name of the business, however, Carson Now readers point to the photo where it says Hacienda Market. We have contacted the sheriff's office for confirmation.
Historically, when one of these devices is discovered, they have been installed in other businesses in the area but may be undiscovered, according to the sheriff's office in a news release.
Carson City business owners or users are being asked to check their point-of-sale system keypads for the device pictured in the photo. If you discover one, please contact non-emergency dispatch to report the device. Do not touch or tamper with the device.
Shoppers and business patrons are being asked to be vigilant of their credit/debit cards and bank accounts. Contact your financial institution for any suspicious transactions. If you have been the victim of a skimmer, please make a report at the Sheriff’s Office during business hours and follow your financial institution’s guidance on card cancellation, replacement, and reporting.
