Another series of strong thunderstorms have developed south of Carson City along the Eastern Sierra and Highway 395 corridor this afternoon and appear to be pushing northward, bringing heavy rain and the potential for flooding, a National Weather Service forecaster said.
There is a Flash Flood Warning now in effect for Alpine County, which includes the Washington Fire burn area near Markleeville. The warning is until 6:15 p.m.
The weather service has advised the storm is over Alpine County and is relatively stationary with the potential to move in a northerly direction toward Lake Tahoe. Over in Mono County, Calif., a line of thunderstorms have been developing from Bridgeport northward in the Coleville And Walker River Canyon areas. These storms are capable of producing heavy rain and hail.
National Weather Service meteorologist Zach Tolby said the storm's dynamics exist to cause flooding and debris flow in the Washington Fire burn area. While the precipitation is good to douse the fire, it is the downpours that happen quickly that are of concern.
Some locations that will experience flooding include Alpine Village, Grover Hot Springs, Mesa Vista, Woodfords, Indian Creek Campground, the Junction of Highway 89 and Highway 4, Markleeville, Turtle Rock Campground and Alpine County Airport.
Meanwhile for the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, there is the potential for flash flooding as the storms push to the north, said Tolby. As of about 4 p.m. the band of thunderstorms behind the one over Alpine County appear to be making going in a northwesterly direction.
Tolby noted these afternoon thunderstorms are now expected through the holiday weekend.
"It will be something people will need to pay attention to, especially if their plans are outdoors," he said.
