Carson City arrests: Women accused in thefts concealed items to look like child in a stroller
Two women were booked into jail Wednesday on burglary, possessing stolen property and other charges after allegedly using a baby stroller and backpack to steal merchandise at Home Depot and Walmart, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Arrested were Michelle Yvette Brown, 44, and Rachel Nicole Gendron, 33. Both are from Reno. Each faces felony charges of possession of stolen property and burglary, gross misdemeanor conspiracy to commit burglary and misdemeanor ex-felon failing to register.
Brown also faces a felony charge of failure to comply with warrant conditions and a gross misdemeanor stolen vehicle warrant. Gendron also faces misdemeanor charges of possession of burglary tools and destruction of property.
According to the arrest report, both women worked together to obtain several hundred dollars worth of merchandise by using a stroller to conceal items before placing them in a backpack, then walking out of the stores or planning on walking out of the stores with items concealed to look like a child in a stroller.
Deputies were called to 3200 Market Street at around 10:15 a.m. Wednesday for a burglary in progress. Walmart security advised a woman was in the store and was placing items in a baby stroller. A second female was also identified by security. Both women were allegedly placing items in a stroller, opening packages in a bathroom stall and then attempting to leave the store with empty boxes with the items in a back pack placed back into a stroller.
Loss prevention from Home Depot had also notified deputies that the women were suspected of stealing Dewalt tool sets, placing items in a baby stroller, going to the restrooms, opening the packages and leaving the store with the merchandise in a backpack inside the stroller. During the investigation, deputies found several items from both stores inside a blue Chevrolet SUV, including a large number of Ryobi tools and other Home Depot items found in a backpack.
Walmart advised $1,255.90 in property damage was made inside the store and $338.99 in property retrieved from the vehicle. Home Depot identified $654.89 in recovered property from the vehicle, and $1,082.84 in empty and damaged packages. Some items were not located in the vehicle during the search, the arrest report states.
Brown admitted to deputies on scene that some of the property located in the vehicle was stolen. Bail for Brown: $59,500. Bail for Gendron: $55,000.
