Carson City arrests: Employee accused of using fake accounts in gift card purchase scheme
A 42-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Thursday at a Fairview Drive home improvement store for suspicion of felony embezzlement, a sheriff’s deputy said.
Messina Blakely was taken into custody at 12:25 p.m. According to the arrest report, a deputy was dispatched to the store in reference to an embezzlement report where an employee was allegedly using gift cards made through fake accounts to buy $1,934.14 in store merchandise.
The deputy arrived and met with the store manager and loss prevention officer. According to the arrest report, surveillance showed the woman getting the gift cards out of the safe and taking them to buy a griddle, portable air conditioner unit, canopy and vacuum.
The deputy made contact with the woman who agreed to speak. She stated she used valid returned item money and put the money in a separate account, turning the money into gift cards, the arrest report states. She was cooperative and filled out a statement at the time of the arrest. Bail: $20,000.
In other arrests:
— A 30-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Friday in the area of North Carson Street and College Parkway for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI, driving without a valid license and improper turn.
According to the arrest report, a deputy was dispatched in the area for a possible DUI driver. The reporting party stated he witnessed men, all appearing highly intoxicated, leave a convenience store and then drive northbound on Carson Street.
The deputy located the suspect's vehicle, and followed it as it was traveling approximately 30 mph in a 45 mph zone north of Hot Springs Road. The vehicle stopped in the right turn lane of the intersection. When the light turned green the vehicle made an improper turn.
The deputy conducted a traffic stop and met with the driver, who had an odor of alcohol coming from him and spoke with slow, thick speech.
The man stated he had consumed alcoholic beverages through the evening and smoked marijuana within the past three hours. He also stated he takes multiple prescription medications including Depakote, Adderall and Lisinopril, according to the report.
The man consented to standardized field sobriety tests and showed signs of impairment on the tests, the report states. He provided a preliminary breath test of .101 and was arrested for suspicion of DUI alcohol/drugs. At jail he provided a voluntary blood sample. Bail: $1,441.
— A 37-year-old Henderson, Nev., man was arrested Thursday, 1 a.m. for a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant issued April 19, 2018 out of Las Vegas Justice Court. Bail: $3,000.
