Lake Tahoe sets new record high at 90 degrees, nearly 20 degrees hotter than average temps for June

According to the US National Weather Service, a new daily record high was set Friday in South Lake Tahoe.

The previous daily record was set in 1985 at 86 degrees. The average temperature for the high altitude lake is generally around 71 degrees for June, far below the recorded 90 degrees that swept the lake shores Friday.

Additionally, Reno nearly met its record high as well at 100 degrees. The previous record was also set in 1985 with a high of 101 degrees.

Earlier this week, the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory beginning 11 a.m. Thursday and continuing through 8 p.m. on Friday for Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Minden, Verdi, Gardnerville, Virginia City and Mineral and Lyon Counties.

Residents are urged to stay out of the sun, stay in air-conditioned rooms, drink plenty of water and check on relatives and neighbors. Reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or evening, and wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.

The heatwave for the region will continue through Monday before taking a brief break Tuesday-Thursday with highs in the mid to high 80s. Then another wave of heat will hit with forecasts up to triple digits.
