Carson City man faces felony charges after entering home to take a shower

A 27-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday on felony charges of violation of probation and being a sex offender failing to register. Mario Moreno was arrested in the 200 block of Jeanell Drive.
According to the arrest report, an officer assigned to the Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team responded to a residence for a report of a suspicious subject at a residence.

Upon arrival, the deputy attempted to knock on the door of the residence several times, in which the front window and curtains were open. The officer knocked and announced through the open window several times without receiving an answer. Another deputy arrived and advised a window was open but he couldn't see anyone inside.

Dispatch contacted the officer over the radio and advised the man was in the residence but was scared to come out. The man told dispatch that he is homeless and was only using the shower of the residence. Officers then used a PA system from a patrol vehicle to ask the man to exit the residence. During that time officers learned from neighbors that the person who lived there previously had been evicted and no one was to be inside the residence, the arrest report states.

The man eventually exited where he was detained. Dispatch advised the man was on Parole and Probation with a condition of "not to possess any electronic devices which access the internet." The man advised he had a phone in his pocket he could access the internet with. He is also registered as a sex offender at another apartment in the building, which had recently been vacated. Officers spoke with the occupant of the apartment who advised they had only lived there for three days and and that they don't know Moreno. Parole and Probation requested a no bail hold be placed on the man and he was taken to jail. Bail for the charge of failing to register as a sex offender: $2,500.

In other arrests: A 47-year-old transient, Michael Scott Hopper, was booked Wednesday into Carson City Jail on a felony failure to appear warrant, dated June 17, 2014, related to possession of a controlled substance. Bail: $25,000.

— A 22-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday, 11:22 p.m. at 20 College Parkway on a misdemeanor charge of defrauding an innkeeper. According to the arrest report, the man was picked up by a cab company from a Carson City casino and asked to taken to the residence.

The cab driver began driving the man when he became belligerent and called the driver names, the arrest report states. The man also could not tell the driver where he lived in Carson City.

The driver stopped at 20 College Parkway and called police for asisstance. The man was passed out in the front passenger seat of the cab when officers arrived. An officer identified himself as he woke up the man, who was extremely intoxicated and acted as if he could not hear the officer, the arrest report states.

The man was asked for his identification, in which he was unable to provide. The officer asked the man where he lived in Carson City. The man refused to answer. The officer asked if he could pay the cab driver for his services. The total owed to the cab driver was $7. the man said he did not have the money. The officer asked the man if he could call a friend to come pay the driver and give him a ride home. The man said he did not have anyone to call.
He was booked into jail and submitted to a preliminary breath test where he blew a .207, the arrest report states. He faces a charge of defrauding an inkeeper. Bail: $412.

— A 56-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday, 7:05 p.m. in the 2000 block of Utah Street on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery. According to the arrest report, officers met with the reporting witness who said the man was keeping a woman from leaving a residence.

Officers met with the man, who smelled strongly of alcohol. He told officers that he was arguing with his wife, saying "I have drinking and that is the truth serum, so I told her what was wrong with her," the arrest report states.

The officer asked the man if he prevented his wife from leaving and the man said no, "I just held her," the arrest report states.

Officers went to the rear of the resident and spoke with the woman, who said they were having an argument. The woman said she went to her daughter's room to get away from the man. She said her husband put both of his hands on her arms and squeezed them tightly to prevent her from leaving, the arrest report states.

The woman told officer she struggled to get away from her husband, attempting to go around him to get out of the room and he moved in front of her to stop her, the report states. The woman gave her 11-year-old daughter a cell phone to call police.
The man blew a .12 alcohol breath test and was taken to jail. Bail: $3,139.

— A 42-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday, June 18 in the area of Shady tree Lane on a warrant issued out of Dayton Township Court for marijuana possession. Bail: $737.

— A 32-year-old Carson City woman was booked into Carson City jail Wednesday on a criminal contempt warrant issued May 28, 2009 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $1,309.

— An 18-year-old Carson City woman was booked into Carson City Jail on a contempt of court warrant issued April 29, 2014 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $3,000.

Those arrested and facing charges are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

NV Energy reports 2,636 customers without power Monday morning in Carson City. The outage was reported at 9:46 a.m. At this time there is not an estimated time of restoration. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 5PM: Fire crews will be mopping up the Callahan Fire overnight and into tomorrow. One primary residential structure was lost along with multiple outbuildings. The cause is under investigation at this time. Some fire evacuations remain in place at Callahan Rd and Fawn Lane as crews mop up hot spots. See Perimetermap.com here for evacuation updates.

UPDATE 12:55PM: The fire is estimated at approximately 100 acres; approximately 3,000 people have been impacted by evacuations. Rain is falling on the fire scene. Additional Strike Teams totaling 10-15 engines have begun arriving to assist on the fire, according to Eastern Sierra Fire and Ice, which tracks fires in the region.

Just before 11 a.m. on Monday, the Washoe County Alert system sent out an evacuation notice to residents in the Callahan Ranch area stating they should evacuate immediately.

The evacuation point is at South Valleys Library located at 15650A Wedge Pkwy, Reno.

Dayton Elementary students were treated Friday to a helicopter fly-in by the Nevada National Guard as part of the school's Veterans Day program.

A team from Nevada National Guard landed a helicopter on the soccer field after the school's Veterans Day assembly. Dayton Elementary is the only school in Lyon County that is a Purple Star School.

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11 and is a federal holiday to honor all veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. A number of events are planned in Carson City and surrounding counties.

Charle Abowd, a world renowned, award-winning chef and restaurateur but even more than that a philanthropist and community fixture for decades, died Saturday evening, according to longtime friends.

Abowd, 73, was a pioneer in farm to table dining, along with his wife Karen who co-owned Cafe at Adele's, he was a champion and supporter of music and the arts. He was a man who dedicated himself to lifting up others.
