Carson City sheriff’s log: Deputies investigate robbery at Firehouse Subs

Carson City Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating a robbery that happened Monday night at Firehouse Subs in the 3100 block of Highway 50 East.

The suspect left the restaurant taking a small amount of cash after having led the clerk to believe he had a gun, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. The incident happened at around 8:30 p.m.

The suspect is described as Hispanic, 20-30 years of age with a tattoo on his arm, wearing a black and gray striped shirt, blue jeans and a baseball cap. He fled the scene in a gray 4-door vehicle. Carson City sheriff’s deputies were attempting to gather video surveillance, said Furlong.

The following are arrests made Monday by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. All information for the crime log (unless otherwise noted) comes from the arrest reports supplied by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, and is considered by law to be public information. All subjects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The policy of Carson Now is to name anyone who is arrested for a felony offense.

— A 35-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday on suspicion of felony domestic battery causing substantial bodily harm, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Bijhan Jazani was taken into custody at 6:34 p.m. following an investigation of an incident that happened Sunday at around 2 a.m. The suspect allegedly punched a female victim in the face causing injuries to her jaw, a chipped tooth and bloody swelling on her lip, according to the arrest report.

On Monday the suspect requested to meet with the investigating deputy at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested and read his Miranda rights. The officer told him he could make a statement about what happened or speak with his attorney first. He declined to make a statement, according to the arrest report. Bail: $15,000.

— A 36-year-old Carson City man was booked into jail Monday, 1:24 p.m. on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor contempt of court warrant and three courts destruction of property.
Dustin George Maines was arrested in the area of Stewart Street and the Fifth Street parking garage.
According to the arrest report, a witness identified the suspect puncturing a tire of a vehicle in the parking lot. The suspect was found and detained. Dispatch advised he had a confirmed warrant for contempt of court and he was arrested. Bail: $4,741.

— A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday, 4:32 p.m. in the area of William and State streets on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving on an expired registration.

According to the arrest report, a deputy made a traffic stop after observing that a vehicle license plate had an expired tag. A registration check though dispatch also confirmed the vehicle’s registration had expired March 20.

The deputy could smell an odor of alcohol from the vehicle and asked the man how much he had to drink. The man stated “two beers about an hour ago,” the arrest report states. The man consented to both a search for weapons and field sobriety tests. The deputy removed a small glass marijuana pipe and a clear baggie containing trace amounts of marijuana.
The man blew a preliminary breath test of .120 and was arrested. Bail: $2,346.

— A 62-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday, 8:15 p.m. in the 2400 block of Lewis Drive on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic battery. According to the arrest report, the man had been living at the home of the victim as a roommate. The two got into an argument over dog feces. He allegedly grabbed a cell phone out of the woman’s hands and twisted her arm over her head. The deputy observed reddening on the woman’s arm where the man grabbed her. Bail: $3,137.

— A 32-year-old transient was arrested Monday, 10:56 a.m. in the area of the Fifth Street underpass on a misdemeanor failure to appear in traffic court warrant issued May 11, 2016 out of Carson City Justice Court. Bail: $215.

With outside temperatures often in the 90s and above, internal car temperatures can reach anywhere from 114 degrees after 10 minutes, to 140 degrees after an hour. Cracking a window often does nothing at all as rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car, according to the Humane Society of the U.S.

UPDATE: The 'S' on the side of the hill in southeast Carson City that commemorates the Stewart Indian School, and has been there for decades, was vandalized over the weekend. It has since been restored.

Today I started pruning out the water sprouts in my four crabapple trees. Some people might call these “suckers,” but suckers grow up from the bottom of the trunk and water sprouts grow in the upper parts of the tree. I have been training three of these trees into a somewhat flattened umbrella shape for almost 20 years. The water sprouts just ruin that effect. So, out they come.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Saturday night to a brush fire in the area of Lepire Drive in East Carson City.
