National Pony Express Association ReRide through Carson City today
UPDATE: The Pony Express arrived in Carson City this afternoon, with travels along South Curry Street and the capitol building area before heading off to Dayton and then Fort Churchill.
****
UPDATE: Today, Thursday, at around 2 p.m. Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki will be joined by members of the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission to hand off eight letters to the Pony Express riders on the south steps of the Nevada State Capitol Building. A rider will be coming to Carson City from a noon stop in Genoa.
The NPEA’s 35th Annual ReRide will honor the historic Pony Express route covering nearly 2,000 miles between Sacramento, Calif. and St. Joseph, Mo. over 10 days that it was originally completed over 150 years ago. Nevada had several stations and to this day has most of the original trail unpaved and preserved in place. Riders will relay horses and the "mail" 24 hours a day across the entire state of Nevada from June 12-14 and continue on to the eight states on the historic trail ending in Mo.
Some of the letters in the bundle will include notes from Gov. Brian Sandoval, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki, Sen. Reid, Sen. Heller, Rep. Amodei and the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission. The letters will be adorned with the state’s new Sesquicentennial stamp and be sent to various locations throughout the country.
The original ride is ranked among the most remarkable feats to come out of the American West. The Pony Express was in service from April 1860 to November 1861; its primary mission was to deliver mail and news between the two locations.
