Carson City Parks Foundation receives National Pony Express donation for disc golf park

As Carson City’s disc golf complex nears completion, the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation’s president, David Johnson, announced that the Foundation recently received a generous donation from the Nevada Division of the National Pony Express Association, for the sponsorship of a hole at the Carson Ridge Disc Golf Park.

Change in speaker for Leisure Hour Club meeting

The Leisure Hour Club announces that due to extenuating circumstances, John and Ben Rupert, the Club's scheduled speakers for their Wednesday, January 18th meeting will NOT be available.

Replacing these speakers is Kim Copel Harris, who will speak on The History of Pony Express. Ms. Harris is a member of the Leisure Hour Club and currently serves as secretary of the National Pony Express Association, Nevada Division.

Pony Express Re-ride hits the trail June 15 - 25

The National Pony Express Association will be conducting its Annual Re-Ride of the Pony Express Trail from Sacramento, California, to St. Joseph, Missouri, June 15 - 25, 2016. It is expected to pass through Carson City at approximately 2 p.m. Thursday, June 16.

This Re-Ride is a 10-day, 24-hour a day, non-stop event by over 600 riders and horses over the 1,966 mile route of the Pony Express National Historic Trail from California through Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas to Missouri. It is the longest event held annually on a historical trail in the nation.

The Pony Express Rides Again: 2015 re-ride underway

The Pony Express was in operation for just over a year and a half, but its legacy has proven to be a timeless testament to ingenuity and can-do spirit. In an era of limited transportation, a letter could leave St. Joseph, MO and arrive in Sacramento, CA ten days later. Broken into segments of five to twenty miles between stations, the Pony Express traversed eight states and 1,966 miles.

Each year, the National Pony Express Association re-creates the Pony Express of 1860-1861 by riding from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California. Mormon Station State Historic Park is hosting this event in Genoa at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, August 26.
The national, 10-day, 24 hour-a-day event includes more than 600 riders stationed at intervals to relay a mochila (mailbag) filled with Pony Express Mail for the 1,966 mile ride.

Pony Express Trail Monument is newest state marker

A dedication of Nevada's newest state historical marker, which commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express Trail, will be on Thursday, March 31 on public land east of Fallon. The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited.

Celebrating 150 years, Pony Express to Arrive in Carson City

The Pony Express will celebrate its 150th anniversary this year with a ride through Carson City on Wednesday, June 9, arriving at around 8:30 a.m. with a stop at Third and Curry streets. All are welcome to see the exchange of the mochila, with a special presentation event planned at the stop.

Cash in on the celebration of coins this Saturday in Carson City

Time to flip a coin and cash in on some Carson City history this week.
Today through Saturday is National Coin Week and the Nevada State Museum and Reno Coin Club will celebrate the occasion with events culminating on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum.

The 87th annual National Coin Week, will celebrate coin and currency collecting with the theme, “Beautiful Places: Landmarks and Mintmarks.” The Nevada State Museum and the Reno Coin Club, both members of the American Numismatic Association, have several events lined up for the day.
