Governor Sandoval signs bill creating Office Of Cyber Defense Coordination

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval signed several measures into law Friday including one of the Governor’s priorities, Assembly Bill 471, creating the Nevada Office of Cyber Defense Coordination.
“As I said in my state of the state address, there are now five battlefields in our constant fight for safety and security: land, sea, air, space and cyberspace,” said Sandoval. “I’m proud to create Nevada’s first Cyber Defense Center which will be tasked with detecting, preventing, and responding to attacks. We must remain vigilant and stay ahead of those who seek to steal our private information and endanger our resources.”
Assembly Bill 471 establishes the Office of Cyber Defense Coordination within the Department of Public Safety. This office will function as the state’s first Executive Branch Agency devoted entirely to cybersecurity efforts, and will serve as a “nerve center” for statewide cybersecurity preparedness, risk assessment, response, and threat mitigation. The bill also sets forth a legislative declaration regarding the importance of cybersecurity with relation to protecting critical infrastructure. The bill specifically highlights the role of cybersecurity in protecting commerce, ensuring the delivery of essential services to the public in the event of a cyber breach, and the role cybersecurity efforts play in higher education and as a 21st century career pathway.

Senate Bill 26 was sponsored by Lt. Governor Mark Hutchison and prohibits the state from entering into a public works contract with a private company if the company fails to certify that it is not engaged in and will not engage in a boycott of Israel. The bill is seen as an important policy decision to discourage discrimination based on national origin.
Assembly Bill 415 requires businesses in Nevada that accept DMV-issued I.D. cards for purposes of proving identification to also accept I.D. cards issued by a tribal government. Both of these measures are strongly supported by Nevada’s tribal communities, and will help to facilitate commerce and support economic activity across the state.
Senate Bill 375, sponsored by Senator Segerblom, authorizes the Governor to enter into agreements with tribal governments to participate in the implementation of state laws and tribal laws governing the use of marijuana. This measure was supported by all of Nevada’s 27 tribes and will present economic development opportunities for these communities.
