Taste of the Comstock returns to Virginia City featuring food, whiskey, mining and history
VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. — Whether it’s history, mining, museums, fine dining or a thirst-quenching drink from a local saloon, Virginia City’s Taste of the Comstock: Food, Whiskey and Single Jack Competition is a delicious rendezvous into the area's famed Wild West roots.
“This event captures the essence of Virginia City providing participants an opportunity to sample not just the food, but our mining history as well,” said Deny Dotson, tourism director for the Virginia City Tourism Commission. “This event gives people a chance to taste the best of what we have to offer and maybe learn a few things about the Comstock.”
Happening Saturday, June 9, Taste of the Comstock is an Old West, thirst and palate quenching experience that runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Virginia City offers up a chance to get a taste of the town’s heritage from mining history to delicious food along with a hardy dose of whiskey and cigar tasting, just like the good ol’ days. See the video below or go here.
Mining history takes center stage with a Single Jack Drilling competition with top competitors and world-record holders vying for a cash purse.
The goal? To drill the deepest 3/4-inch hole into solid granite using only a series of carbon chisels and a hammer. Comstock miners would hand drill the holes to place dynamite used to expose the precious minerals.
The restaurant tour brings together several locations throughout town. Tasting tickets start at $20 when purchased in advance. Attendees receive a wrist band and a map to all participating locations where samples of the best and most unique fare are available.
Access to the Whiskey and Cigar Lounge, a frequent vice by miners, is $30 in advance and includes access to a private tent, choice of cigar and a variety of whiskeys to sample. Sponsored by Cemetery Gin, Virginia City’s signature spirit.
A package for the restaurant tour and the Whiskey and Cigar Lounge combined are available for $40 in advance.
To purchase advance tickets, visit online or go to the ticket booth located at the Virginia City Jerky Company, 204 South C Street, day of the event.
Taste of the Comstock is sponsored by Dolan Auto Group, Coors Light and Cemetery Gin.
