Carson City weather: Heat is on for the week, upper 90s to near 100 by Saturday
High pressure will produce hot summertime conditions with afternoons in the 90s to near 100 across western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.
Forecast highs around Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas will be around 90 through Friday and the mid to upper 90s through the weekend.
Record highs are likely Thursday-Saturday. Reno may set a new record for earliest 100 on Saturday. The heat may extend into Sunday. There is chance of showers and thunderstorms this weekend and early next week.
The weather service urges people to prepare now. Check the air conditioner in your car and home. Ensure elderly and those prone to heat have a cool place to be late week. Never leave pets inside hot vehicles or garages without ventilation. Bring pets indoors. Have plenty of fresh water for them if they are outside.
Plan outdoor activities for early in the day to avoid heat stresses. If you must be out in the afternoons – wear light color clothes, protect from sun, take frequent breaks and hydrate.
The heat will lead to rapid increase in snowmelt from the high Sierra. River, creek rises may near bank-full stage this weekend.
No flooding is expected on rivers however. Areas most likely to see noticeable rises – Walker and Carson River basins, the eastern Sierra including Bridgeport, Lee Vining, and Mammoth areas. Plan on cold, fast flowing water this week and upcoming weekend. Be extra careful hiking and camping. Creeks often rise at night due to daytime snowmelt.
