Congressional letters help send Carson High School senior to Naval Academy

Carson High School is proud to announce that Senior Jeremy Heaton has accepted an appointment to attend the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. for the fall of 2021. Acceptance into the US Naval Academy is highly competitive and requires not only top academics and extracurricular experiences, but also congressional letters of recommendation.

Heaton received three congressional letters of recommendation from Nevada lawmakers, which was also an incredible feat because each congressional member is limited in the number of students they may recommend each year. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Representative Mark Amodei and Senator Jackie Rosen all wrote nominations for Heaton to attend a military academy.

As the undergraduate college of our country’s naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers of competence, character and compassion in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Naval Academy students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps.

Heaton has led CHS’s football team for the last four years, currently serving as the team’s captain. He has been honored regionally for both academics and football and is an incredible asset to his teammates and coaches because of his dedication and positive attitude. This year, after his third season as a starter for CHS Varsity Football, he was named 2nd Team All-Region Running Back.

“Return with Honor’ is one of the long-time traditions and sayings at Carson High School, and Jeremy epitomized that slogan,” Blair Roman, CHS varsity football coach and Athletic Director, said of Heaton. “His contributions to our school during his career will be part of the great legacy he leaves here adding to the continued writing of the history of Carson High School.”

Beyond football, Heaton has also lettered in CHS Wrestling and ran for two years of CHS Track & Field. His parents, Rob and April Heaton, have dedicated themselves to coordinating and supporting the CHS Football program as the heads of the CHS Football Booster Club for the last several years.

Heaton is an active member of CHSs National Honors Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has participated in many volunteer opportunities for youth football camps and tutoring. Academically, Heaton is ranked in the top 10 of his class at CHS with a 5.1 GPA, and he completed the Engineering pathway of CHS’s Career and Technical Education program.
