Carson City deputies arrest man observed 'huffing' canned air in running vehicle
A 37-year-old man was arrested Monday for misdemeanor suspicion of DUI drugs, possession of a chemical for inhaling, no proof of insurance and fictitious registration, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
According to the arrest report, deputies were called at 3:30 p.m. to the 3300 block of Retail Drive for a report of a man who was huffing inhalant inside a vehicle parked in a parking lot.
A deputy arrived and observed the man actively “huffing” what turned out to be industrial strength canned air. Inhalants are everyday household products that are abused to produce mind-altering effects.
As the officer approached the vehicle, which was running, the man dropped the can. His lips were white and appeared covered in frost, his pupils were dilated and he appeared to be disoriented.
The man attempted to grab the vehicle gear-shifter but was stopped and the ignition turned off once the man was removed from the vehicle and handcuffed, the arrest report states.
Due to the man’s condition in which he was sweating, had bloodshot eyes and had a strong chemical smell coming from his person when he exhaled, paramedics were called to treat him. The suspect had to be held up because he was unable to stand on his own feet and appeared to have loss of consciousness, the arrest report states.
Paramedics arrived and assessed he had normal heart rate and pulse. The man refused to participate in standardized field sobriety tests. The deputy asked the man why he was in the parking lot of a restaurant. The man then asked the officer what city he was in. The officer replied Carson City. The man told the officer he was a long way from home and said he lived in Susanville, Calif. The man was taken to jail and booked on the charges. Bail: $3,123.
