Long time Carson City teacher and coach Shane Quilling dies
Shane Quilling, a long time Carson High School teacher and coach died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, according to teachers and Carson City School District Supt. Richard Stokes.
Quilling served as head coach of the Carson Senators varsity football team for 7 years before stepping down from the position in 2007. He also coached the track and field and softball teams.
Along with his coaching career, Quilling taught various PE and health classes at Carson High. Word of his death has been described by those who knew him as sudden and unexpected.
“This news hits us pretty hard at the high school and throughout the district … our hearts ache,” said Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes. “This was an unexpected and tragic loss.”
The cause of death has not been publicly shared. A teacher who was briefed Saturday said that it was a medical condition.
"He worked passionately for the kids of Carson High and motivated and pushed everyone to be the best they could be," said CHS Teacher Angila Golik, in a Carson Senators Facebook post. "He was a no-nonsense, give-the-shirt-off-your-back kind of guy. He loved his family and gave 110 percent of himself to everything and everyone."
Various CHS students past and present also shared their warm thoughts and considerations on the hashtag CarsonStrong Twitter page.
"Mr. Quilling was the epitome of what a teacher and coach should be. My heart is broken for our little community tonight and as we move forward from yet another horrible tragedy," one person commented. Another student wrote: "These last 4 months have not been kind to our little town. My heart is hurting."
It has been a difficult few months for Carson High School. On Nov. 9, 2017 an accident on Kings Canyon Road claimed the life of CHS student Timothy Jones and injured several other students.
There will be grief counselors available for staff and students Monday, a Carson High School teacher said.
