Carson City area weather: Near 90 by midweek then cooler over Memorial Day weekend
A warming trend will return to the Carson City region this week with dry conditions early on and north to northeast breezes each afternoon. By Wednesday, highs could reach 90 degrees for lower elevations, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Winds are likely to increase with some cooling and a few showers possible toward the end of the week.

Monday through Wednesday
A benign weather pattern takes a hold through Wednesday as an upper level ridge moves overhead. Temperatures will warm considerably into mid-week, with highs Monday expected to be in the low-80s, increasing to near 90 by Wednesday in the lower valleys of western Nevada. We typically see our first 90 degree day here in Reno around May 30 (using the 30-year climate normal data), so this is not too out of the norm.
Sierra valleys will be in the 70s Monday and Tuesday, before having a shot at low-80s Wednesday. If you're going to be outside, wear plenty of sunscreen and take frequent breaks in shade or air conditioner. We'll feel north-northeast breezes through Tuesday, before the westerly zephyr breeze kicks back in Wednesday afternoon.
As the upper level ridge axis moves overhead Wednesday, we'll see PWATs (precipitable water) increasing to near 0.6", which will allow for some afternoon convective build-ups to occur over Mineral, Lyon and Churchill counties along the leading edge of the zephyr breeze. If showers/thunderstorms do develop, most of the rainfall should evaporate before hitting the ground due to the very deep boundary layer (10,000 feet AGL), creating locally gusty winds.
Thursday into Memorial Day Weekend:
Thursday, the upper level ridge begins to slide eastward as an upper level trough moves near the Pacific Northwest. The main factor in whether we get any showers/thunderstorms next weekend is how deep the trough digs into the western US. At this time, the EC-ENS has the deeper solution, while the GEFS has the system taking a more easterly track along the US-Canadian border. With either solution, temperatures will cool, and winds will increase into Memorial Day weekend in response to the lowering heights aloft.
Westerly wind gusts Thursday and Friday look to be around 30-40 mph areawide, which could create lake recreation and travel impacts. If the solution of the EC-ENS plays out, we may see some showers/thunderstorms Friday across northeastern California and far northwestern Nevada. If you have any outdoor plans this Memorial Day weekend, please continue to check the updated forecasts.
