Carson City students complete Parole and Probation internship program
Two local students have been recognized for their completion of a 16-week internship program created through the Carson City branch of the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation and Western Nevada College.
WNC students Steven Larkin and Sindy Barajas were selected for the Spring 2017 semester. On Thursday, May 18, the two successfully completed the program. They intend to finish their college education through the University of Nevada, Reno.
"They did an outstanding job in the program and learned a great deal about the Parole and Probation function," said Lt. Jorge Pierrott with Nevada Parole and Probation, Northern Command, Carson City.
The internship program is designed to give students the opportunity to learn more about the inner workings of the Division of Parole and Probation. The internship introduces students to all facets of the Parole and Probation function and insight on how parole and probation impacts the criminal justice system, Pierrott said.
The internship was geared to provide students with a “hands on” experience in order for them to receive the most realistic experience of what Parole and Probation professionals do on the job, he said.
Students were taught the rehabilitation process, education on how to communicate with offenders and first-hand experience on how parole and probation officers guide offenders to become contributing members of society. They also learned the tactics and methods used by Parole and Probation staff to prevent criminal activity and increase public safety.
To be picked, students selected to participate in the program had to be in good standing with the college, possess strong leadership skills, strong communication skills, possess a positive attitude and be motivated to learn.
Western Nevada College staff performed initial interviews on all potential candidates. Those students who passed the initial interview were later interviewed by the Division of Parole and Probation before being accepted to the program.
The Division of Parole and Probation and Western Nevada College intend to continue the program and give future students the opportunity to learn more about the Parole and Probation function, while receiving college credit.
