Carson City bike event to honor pedestrians, cyclists injured or killed on roadways
Muscle Powered, a Carson City non-profit that works to promote safer walking and biking conditions, is holding a Walk and Ride of Silence tonight, Wednesday May 16, to honor pedestrians and cyclists who have been injured or killed while traveling on public roadways.
In 2017 100 pedestrians and 9 cyclists were killed on Nevada roadways. For pedestrians, that is nearly double the 2007 numbers.
The Ride of Silence is an international ride that is now in its 15th year. The goal is to increase motorist awareness of cyclists while promoting safe and lawful cycling behavior. Cyclists must wear helmets, stop at stop signs and red lights, and adhere to other rules of the road. Muscle Powered added the walk this year to bring attention to the problem of increasing pedestrian deaths.
The Carson City walk and ride will begin at Telegraph Square (Curry and Telegraph streets on the westside of Carson City), with walkers and riders gathering at 6:00 p.m. starting at Telegraph Square. The 2-mile walk or 8-mile ride will follow with a local sheriff’s office escort. A special program will follow at the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater at 7:30 and will be the end point of the ride and walk.
“This is a way to honor those who have died and to ask motorists to pay attention especially in crossing areas for pedestrians and when passing cyclists. Give us three feet when passing and PLEASE, share the road,” said Muscle Powered President Randy Gaa.
