42 cited in Carson City crosswalk safety operation
Crosswalk safety operations on three busy Carson City streets commenced Tuesday with 42 citations issued to motorists, said Carson City Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott McDaniel. Of those, 23 were issued for failing to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk and the others were for various violations including cell phone use, speeding and seatbelt use.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office and Nevada Highway Patrol were visible during the day-long event as an officer dressed in a brightly colored orange shirt and hat walked through the crosswalks on Stewart Street across from the Carson Mall and along the north and south ends of Carson Street as part of a public safety effort to get motorists to stop for pedestrians.
While the event was aimed at motorists not stopping for pedestrians, motorists were also stopped for speeding, talking on cell phones, and not wearing seat belts.
The operation is designed to help reduce the number of pedestrian versus vehicle crashes through the education and enforcement of pedestrian related issues. The last one was conducted Dec. 23, 2014 in which 29 motorists were issued warnings.
Joining Forces is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program that promotes statewide enforcement in the areas of: DUI, distracted driving, seat belt use, speed and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness about the dangers of making poor choices while driving.
