Business Spotlight: Learn to dance at Yaples Ballroom
Dancing is as much a form of human communication and intimacy as it is art, said professional dance instructor Tiffany Alm, who owns Yaples Ballroom in downtown Carson City.
“We help couples connect in a new way that they couldn’t do while watching a movie or playing a board game,” she said. “When singles come in, they get to have interaction and connection with people … and get socially involved in something.”
Partner dancing is a specialty of the dance studio, which has been located at 315 North Carson Street for the past seven years.
“Social dancing is very satisfying for so many people,” Alm said.
So is its value to a person’s mental and physical well-being.
“Everyone likes the environment and the exercise, mentally and physically,” Alm said. “We offer something to do that is low impact but great exercise.”
Whether you have two left feet or nimble foot work, Yaples Ballroom dance studio is an appropriate venue for anyone who wants to cut a rug.
“We break things down nicely, go at a comfortable pace for people and help people feel comfortable so that they can learn,” Alm said. “Many people are super nervous, so we try to have fun and learn in a simple way.”
Alm is knowledgeable of a host of partner dancing styles: from multiple Ballroom steps to several Latin styles, Country to Night Club and Swing dances.
Ballroom dancing features the Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango and Quickstep, while Country includes a two-step, Polka, and line dance. There’s also the Night Club Hustle, East and West Coast Swing, Jitterbug, Charleston, Cha Cha, Rumba, Salsa, Mambo and Samba dances, among many others.
Additional unique dance styles taught at the studio include belly dancing, Irish dancing, wedding dance, Quinceanera, pole dancing, aerial silks.
Alm said she opened the studio in February 2011 because the right opportunity had come along for her to engage in her passion.
“I fell in love with everything about this style of dancing and absolutely loved dancing with a partner,” she said. “As my love for the art grew, I considered opening a ballroom in Carson City, but was unsure about whether or not I could make it a success.”
Then, in February 2011, local attorney Jon Yaples contacted Alm about operating a dance studio out of the building he owned. Since then, the ballroom has become a familiar part of downtown Carson City.
“It has grown and blossomed into the strong studio that we see today,” she said. “This is my hometown, so this seemed like the perfect fit.”
Naples Ballroom can be an ideal spot for a date night or group night out, weddings and other private events. The dance floor can be rented, or ask the studio to deliver portable dance floors to your venue. Dance instruction is also mobile, Alm said.
