What Works: You aren’t buying time, you're structuring your deal
I love taking clients on Monday mornings just before I write this column. I particularly enjoy the complementary consultations. Because, then I get to share with all of you! This morning, I was speaking with a lovely new client in Seattle.
With an outwardly attractive offer on her plate, she needed some time to do some inner research on whether it was right. She hadn’t felt great about the direction of the company. Now that has been offered the opportunity to level up, she needed to buy some time. It was then I told her this. It’s not buying time if the time spent is structuring the deal that is right.
I spent this weekend watching an impactful film with a friend. That film is “The Shift” with the late Dr. Wayne Dyer. The film explains the difference between ego and a true calling. Ego feels like it needs to be figured out. There are angles to work. There is an ideal outcome or result which must be met to achieve happiness.
Whenever my client spoke of her current deal, there was doubt. There wasn’t inspiration. There was this overtone of, “I need to buy time to figure this out.”
Ultimately, when you are inspired by something there is little to figure out or make work. There’s more flow, less struggle. If you need time, then there’s something in the deal that isn’t right. You need to structure your deal so it triggers inspiration. And, if it doesn’t inspire you that’s when you need to ask yourself the tough question. Do I walk from this deal?
I can tell you this. I have opportunities that come my way. You will notice, when you are good, deals do come your way. When you are aware of your criteria, it’s not just a NO. It’s a “NO, because,” which fits more within your value set.
I am convinced a lot of people don’t say no and settle because they aren’t skilled yet at structuring their deal. Structuring that deal starts with knowing the core values you hold. Think of yourself as a company versus a person for a moment. Companies have core values and a brand mission they stand and align by. Through alignment, they create a focused approach which allows them to compete. You can have this advantage.
The next time you are offered an opportunity, don’t buy time. Ask enough questions to structure your deal. One of these things will happen. They will decide that the deal is not right. You will decide the deal is not right. You both will come to the same conclusion and the deal will happen or it won’t. Either way, you are free from accepting deals that do you a disservice because you feel you should say yes.
