Carson City weather: Spring storm systems bring wind, rain and Sierra snow to the region
Gusty winds will continue Friday as a weather system moves into the region bringing showers to Carson City by afternoon and the potential for high elevation snow in the Sierra. A brief break is expected Saturday before a series of systems is expected to begin Sunday and last into next week.
This moderate spring storm, by Sierra standards, associated with the cold front has prompted the National weather Service to issue a Wind Advisory for Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas today and a Winter Weather Advisory for the Sierra.
Precipitation is expected to quickly spill into the Sierra which may lead to periods of brief moderate rain showers in western Nevada valleys. There’s also chance for a few isolated thunderstorms as the front quickly moves into western Nevada.
Winds are expected to be gusty and strong. Widespread winds of 25-35 mph can be expected with peaks gusts of 50 mph and up to 60 mph in wind prone areas. This could create some localized areas of blowing dust which even if brief can cause hazardous driving conditions.
A few showers may linger along the Sierra crest Saturday morning ad for the most part the showers should end. Another round of cold air and precipitation is expected Sunday and Monday.
There is a possibility that we could see snow levels dropping to near 4,500 feet on Monday morning as the coldest air is expected to move over the Sierra and western Nevada. Forecast confidence on seeing snow to the valley floors is low, although there is a chance of light slushy accumulations in the valleys and foothills.
