Sheriff's Office investigates windows shot out at downtown Carson City antique store
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is investigating windows that were shot out early Tuesday morning at a downtown Carson City antique store.
The incident happened at just after 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at Hanifin’s Arts and Antiques on the Curry Street entrance. The business is located at 210 North Carson Street. Two large plate glass windows were shot out. Dispatch received word of the vandalism at 1:33 a.m.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said the shooting incident is under investigation and did not elaborate further.
According to the Hanifin’s Facebook page, the vandalism activated the burglar alarm and deputies were called to the scene. The Hanifin’s Facebook page suggests the incident may have been politically motivated because the damage was done to windows that had three campaign signs.
Meanwhile, the campaign for Carson City Supervisor Brad Bonkowski issued a press release Tuesday morning stating there were a number of yard signs defaced sometime overnight.
Sheriff Furlong said the sign vandalism was also being investigated.
Furlong noted that it is a campaign year and political sign vandalism is not uncommon. He stated that sign vandalism is a misdemeanor offense to private property and carries with it jail time and fines.
“We see this every political year and it is rare to catch someone in the act but we have in the past,” said Furlong. “With the cooperation of neighbors, those living in neighborhoods and citizens being alert, we have captured them before. If they’re caught they will be prosecuted.”
The following is a press release from the Bonkowski campaign:
Supervisor Brad Bonkowski’s supporters spent Tuesday morning replacing dozens of campaign signs that were tagged overnight. Vandals spray painted the signs, crossing out his name with black paint. It appears that Bonkowski was singularly targeted, as no other nearby signs were damaged.
"This is disappointing to see this kind of behavior, when we're just trying to run a clean race based on the issues” Bonkowski said, adding “the campaign team works hard to raise funds. This will cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars to repair, but we're getting on it right away to get everything cleaned up."
Campaign manager Larry Messina had even stronger words, “It's disturbing to see such infantile behavior in our fine city. Disagreements with policies and votes on issues are part of our political process and welcome for debate. Anonymously destroying property is childlike and cowardly.”
Defacing and vandalizing campaign signs is a crime, and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office is aware of the vandalism. Campaign volunteers are hoping that anyone with information on who may have damaged the signs contact the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
