Stewart Indian School to host first heritage, culture class: Cooking with nettles
For the first time, the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum in Carson City will be hosting a heritage and culture class for the community. This inaugural class's topic is Cooking with Nettles.
Nettles are an important traditional food across many indigenous American cultures, and are highly nutritious, high in calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, and Vitamin A.
Melanie Smokey will lead the class Saturday, April 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning at the Stewart Indian School located at 1 Jacobsen Way in Carson City.
Participants will learn how to identify and harvest nettles for cooking, which includes a walk down to Clear Creek from the classroom to harvest.
On returning to the classroom, participants will cook the nettles with eggs and bacon (or a vegetarian option), as well as learn how to dry the nettles to make tea.
The cost to participate is $5 per person.
